Statistics for the production of Belgian French-language books

The statistics of the production of publishers are produced each year by ADEB.

The objective of this document is to present the economic and financial activity of the French-language publishing members of ADEB.

The statistics presented in this report give a view that is largely representative of the economic weight and standing of the sector.

The comparative statistics detailed in the documents below, entitled ‘Données’, present a yearly look at the publishing production of the members of ADEB – in Belgium and in the export markets abroad. Please note again that these figures are in French.

The book market in Belgium

To get an overall picture of the ‘consumption’ of books in Belgium, and to evaluate the size of the Belgian book market, please refer to the study ‘Le marché du livre de langue française en Belgique’ (The market of French-language books in Belgium), carried out for the Service de la promotion des lettres du Ministère de la Communauté française de Belgique (the Service of promoting literature, of the Ministry of the French-speaking Community of Belgium) by ADEB.

Unlike in France, in Belgium there is no legal obligation to provide statistical data. The accuracy of the presented studies therefore essentially depends on how fully and accurately the publishers replied to the questions, and the manner in which they did so.

Observations of the digital book market

The study was ordered by PILEn to be carried out by IPSOS, under the guidance of ADEB, for the Service général des Lettres et du Livre of the Fédération Wallonie Bruxelles. The study of the market was based on a sample of 1,000 people, representing the French-speaking population of Belgium in terms of gender, age and regions. The study was carried out on line, meaning that the respondents were, shown by filling out the study, capable of using digital publications. The obtained rate of readers is that of the alphabetised population.
