2017 : Morocco is honoured in Paris

After Brussels and London, it was the turn of Paris to host its book fair this March. The 37th Paris Book Fair took place at the Porte de Versailles and welcomed nearly 160,000 visitors, a 3% increase from 2016. Around 3,000 authors and 1,200 exhibitors – from 10 regions and over 50 countries – were there. The organising team also noted a strong presence of a young public.

During the protocol visit on Thursday evening, our books did not miss the opportunity to catch the eye of the French president, François Hollande !

On Monday, the ‘professional’ day of the Fair, ADEB took advantage of the fact that Morocco was being honoured at the book fair by organising a meeting between French-language publishers at our stand, to mark the friendship that has always existed between the Professional Union of Publishers of Morocco (l’Union professionnelle des éditeurs du Maroc) and ADEB. We received numerous propositions regarding collaborations from Moroccan publishers, particularly on works concerning tourism, human sciences and university works. If you are interested, do not hesitate to contact us so we can put you in touch. Notably, AWEX and BIE are organising together a multisectional mission to Morocco from 15th-19th May. Morocco will also be a target country for AWEX next year.

The debates also seemed to have had a great success this year : more than 22,000 participants went to the conferences according to the organisers. Eric Bouancheaux (of La Charte publishing house) took part in a round-table discussion of the BIEF regarding scientific publishing. He presented the Belgian side with panache !

The next fair is already planned for the 16 – 19 March 2018 !

Conclusions after the 2016 Paris Book Fair…

The Paris Book Fair remains an unmissable event in the French-language publishing world. For the second consecutive year, attendance was announced to have fallen slightly by the organisers.

The layout of the Fair had been entirely restructured. The places reserved for French regions and each country’s representatives were on the edges of the general stalls. The ‘Belgique Wallonie-Bruxelles’ stand was not badly situated, but was, however, far from the big centres of interest for the public, who were drawn to the major publishing houses. The stand was much too small to truly represent the activities of our publishers and all of their works, which should have found a place.

The solution found in 2016 following the refusal of finance from the Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, did not please the publishers who regretted the absence of enough space to present their new releases :

  • Which would ensure visibility, and the presence of Belgian publishing in the French and French-language markets ;
  • Which would lead to direct sales or orders ;
  • Which would show French authors, who are numerous in being published in Belgium in certain areas, that their works were well represented on the market ;
  • Where meetings with authors could take place ;
  • Where commercial contacts were present with distributors and booksellers from Africa and the Maghreb who were a slight presence in Frankfurt, for example : the presentation of new works, orders…

The French-language Belgian publishers wish to maintain a presence at this book fair.

SNE Notice : 16th September 2015

For its 36th edition, the Paris Book Fair will make some changes by offering the public a new, renovated structure with :

  • A new name, new visual identity, a new setting and an entirely rethought design.
  • An innovative and exciting cultural programme, accessible and qualitative, reflecting the diversity of the world of publishing, in and for the first time, outside the walls, of Paris ;
  • A late-night opening and times dedicated particularly to young people.

The new Fair will now be called LIVRE PARIS.

Paris Book Fair 2015

The Paris Book Fair finished with a positive report, despite the 10% drop in the number of visitors. The collective stand for Belgique Wallonie-Bruxelles is always appreciated by visitors who are looking for the publications of our publishers. It is the meeting place of loyal amateurs.

Themes of 2014

  • Literature from Argentina; a busy and multicultural literature.
  • Shanghai ; city of light.
  • Space of wisdom and knowledge.

The Belgian Collective Stand

The ‘Belgique Wallonie-Bruxelles’ welcomed around thirty publishers individually, to whom they added publishers represented by Espace Livres & Création.

Participation of the publishers of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels

April 2013 : a brief report on our participation

The community organized in partnership with EL&C and the Centre Wallonia-Brussels in Paris welcomed 33 publishers and more than 40 authors for book signings and meetings.

Our different activities were a real success, in particular the workshop for children organized by Kate’Art, of the reading of musical poems. The publishers and their works enjoyed a better visibility thanks to the presentation tables that were preferred to the bookcases. It gave visitors better access to our books. The French publishers concluded this Book Fair with mixed results, due to less people attending the event and a sharper decrease of the sales. Saturday 23rd was the best day in terms of attendance.

The Paris Book Fair

"Four years ago now, the Paris Book Fair embarked on a strategic repositioning, with the aim of encouraging even more young visitors to come to the show and, on the trade side, of developing the digital areas and the Fair’s international profile.
Drawing on thirty year’s experience of engaging the consumer attendance with high-quality cultural programming, at the same time the Paris Book Fair has developed industry platforms that have constantly expanded in scope and increased in quality.
Today the Paris Book Fair is a model for other international exhibitions, many of them now keen to move beyond being a rights marketplace and develop initiatives aimed at the consumer attendance.
In theses times of radical and face-paced change, the Paris Book Fair remains a key event bringing the entire book sector together.
Today it offers the book industry timely networking and business opportunities including international and audiovisual rights, translation, the digital sector and exclusive previews for booksellers. The Fair now attracts exhibitors from more than 40 countries and presents a dynamic events programme each year – including the guest city of honour, publisher fellowship, etc.
Keen to bring the whole publishing industry on board, this year the Fair is offering a “booster” package to enable small publishers to take part, giving them the chance to meet buyers and expand their business.
In a world where the shift to digital – blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. – is becoming the focus of interest for many industry players, we on the Paris Book Fair team remain convinced that the exhibition format has lost none of its relevance: the Fair is a key strategic date in the calendar of any company looking to grow and expand its business.
My entire team is on hand to help create the optimum conditions for your participation in the next Paris Book Fair."
